On a professional level, working from the WG office in Prague and actually meeting my coworkers face-to-face was great and had a big positive impact on my productivity and my understanding of WG culture. From a personal perspective, I believe Prague is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever been to, and its architecture is just breathtaking.
Leaving Shanghai behind was not an easy task, especially considering the pandemic circumstances, but I have to say that the friendly people at WG made it as easy as it could be. General information
Wargaming is looking to hire and provide relocation support to very talented and skilled professionals who want to join our international team. In the later sections, we try to answer some of the questions you might have. We know we can't answer all your questions, so, if you have any more, just ask us in the interview.
What is the relocation process?
During the later stages of the interview process, we will partner with you to understand your specific needs in regards to relocation, and answer any questions you might have about the move, what documents you may need to prepare, and all the necessary information about life in Prague as well as work at Wargaming.
Am I authorized to live and work in the Czech Republic?
If you are a citizen of an EU country, Island, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, you have a similar legal status as citizens of the Czech Republic, i.e. you don’t need a residence permit to live in the CZ and you also have free entry into the Czech labour market.
Otherwise, you will need the relevant work and residence permit (Employee or Blue Card for employees and a family reunification permit for family members) to work in the Czech Republic. However, there are a few situations where you may not need a work permit in the Czech Republic. During the interview process, we will be able to confirm your status. If you accept our job offer, our HR department will assist you with the immigration process to get the necessary permits.
Does the company offer temporary accommodation?
Wargaming offers temporary accommodation for a limited period, during which you will need to find your own accommodation.
How does the company help with finding accommodation?
Our HR department will provide you with support in finding a new home in Prague, such as that the HR department will coordinate property viewings, deal with real estate agents and agencies, provide support in checking the lease agreement, coordinate handover process, etc. Our HR department will be happy to help you.
Legal status
The legal status of your family usually depends on your or your family’s citizenship. Unless you or your family members are coming from EU countries, your family members will need to apply for a family reunification visa or residence permit. Again, there can be various situations and our HR department will consult with you and advise you of the legal status as well as assist you with the immigration process.
Does the company pay for the relocation of my family?
The company usually covers the relocation costs of the employee, his or her spouse and children.
How do my family and I access medical care and what is the quality?
The Czech Healthcare System is divided into public and private healthcare facilities and, as an employee, you shall participate in the Czech public health insurance system. This may or may not be the case for your family members, depending on their legal status. In the latter case, it is necessary to arrange commercial health insurance for family members. Each case may be a little different, consultation with Prague HR department is recommended.
What is the schooling system in the Czech Republic?
If you have children and you live in the Czech Republic there is the choice between a nursery, elementary, secondary school, high school (grammar school), and university, depending on your children’s age. You can choose between private international schools or a opt for Czech public or private schools. Public education in the Czech Republic is inexpensive but, because of the language barrier, as all subjects except for languages are taught in Czech, you might like to decide for a private or international school. However, be aware that international schools have notoriously high fees and need to be talked to in advance as they usually have limited number of free spots.
Is Czech Republic safe?
When relocating to a new city or country, one of the first things we ask ourselves is “is it safe?”. According to the 2017 Global Peace Index report, the Czech Republic is the 6th safest country in the world to live.
Will I have any trouble in the Czech Republic if I don’t speak Czech?
Like in any foreign country it’s always good to know some basic phrases, like “Thank you” and “Goodbye” (“Děkuji” and “Na shledanou”). In the main cities like Prague and Brno you’ll find that most people speak English. When venturing out of the main cities, however, you may find fewer people speak English—but there is always someone around who’ll be able to help you when it comes to ordering food or buying a train ticket. If all else fails, you can always connect to Wi-Fi and use Google Translate!
Lifestyle in the Heart of Europe
In the Czech Republic, there is something to suit everybody. If you’re single or a couple, the nightlife won’t disappoint, with many late night non-stop bars, restaurants and theaters, and an endless array of festivals to keep you busy in the summer, you surely won’t be bored. For people at a different stage of life, possibly raising a family, the Czech Republic has excellent British schools, good and easily accessible healthcare, parks for children to play in during the warmer months and winter activities for the whole family. Not to mention the Czech Republic is in the heart of Europe, making it an ideal location for travel, with well-connected train and bus services to neighboring countries, and low cost airlines flying directly to Spain, France, Italy, London and Greece, to name a few. This makes it a perfect location to travel and experience new food and cultures. There is something for everyone in the Czech Republic for whatever stage of life you’re in.
Where to live
Where you decide to live will impact your overall Prague experience. There are three main factors to consider when deciding where to live in Prague—the cost of rent including utilities, lifestyle and travel. You have your hip and trendy areas such as Karlín, Vinohrady and Holešovice, where you’ll find many bars, restaurants and cafes, or you might want to be right in the center of the old town in Prague 1. For individuals who prefer a more relaxed pace of life, or have a family, you might look at the Prague 4 Braník and Podolí neighborhoods, Prague 5 Smíchov, or Prague 6 Dejvice.
Transport
Prague’s public transport is ranked the fifth best in the world, with well interconnected metro, bus, ferry and tram services making it easy for people to travel around Prague by public transport. The Prague public transport system works on a trust system whereby you buy a travel card called a “Litacka” which can be topped up on a monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly basis. You can then use the transport system unlimitedly without having to tap on or off, making it fast, easy and simple.
How do I pay taxes?
Your taxes and social and health insurance contributions are taken from your salary and are paid by the company on a monthly basis.
What is the amount of tax?
Due to progressive taxation in place the income tax rate shall be 15% and 23% depending on the gross income. There will also be mandatory deductions of 9% for social and 4.5% for health insurance. As a candidate in the later stages of the process, our HR department will help you understand the calculation of the net salary.
On what terms are foreign employees hired: by an employment agreement or by a contract?
Locals as well as foreign employees are primarily hired by an unlimited contract.
Will I have medical coverage?
As an employee, you will join the public health system under which you shall receive the same medical coverage as local citizens.
